Refraction
for piano trio
Program Notes
Refraction is a two-movement homage to the Canadian Arctic, named after the phenomenon of light bending through ice to create striking patterns. The first movement, Frozen Fractals, employs string harmonics and the extensive range of the piano to create a unique sound world from a traditionally “classical ensemble”.
The second movement, Glacial Rhapsody, develops on previously established motifs, stitching together a musical “quilt” that brings the listener on a trek through the vast tundra of the North.
